Increase Database Performance in Amazon Cloud

When it comes to the performance of an application, a database clearly holds a very vital role. The faster the database can deliver results, the faster an application can display data. But when it comes to database in a cloud, things are a little tricky, especially when you are dealing with Nosql databases like Cassandra and MongoDB.

In a recent blog post by “Werner Vogels (CTO at amazon.com)”, Vogels said that the amazon.com customers are bringing a great demand for resources from the amazon aws Cluster Compute and Cluster GPU instances. Now, this increase in demand for the resources led to an introduction of new instance type called “High I/O Quadruple Extra Large Instance”. The new instance type offers very high disk I/O with an introduction of 2 TB solid state drive he mentioned in one of his blog post.

The new instance type also brings high level of CPU, along with memory and network speed. The API name for the new instance type is “hi1.4xlarge” which has over 60 GB of memory and 35 EC2 Compute Units (8 virtual cores, with each core having 4.4 EC2 Compute Units).

The new instance type comes with 64 bit platform comprising of 10 Gigabit Ethernet NIC connection which is in turn connected to other instances that has high I/O. For more technical specifications you should checkout this link.

Vogels also said “The SSDs will give you very high IO performance: for 4k random reads you can get 120,000 IOPS when using PV and 90,000 when using HVM or Windows. Write performance on SSDs is more variable depending on, among other things, the free space the disk, the fragmentation and the type of filesystem. With PV virtualization we are seeing between 10,000 and 85,000 IOPS for 4k random writes and with HVM between 9,000 and 75,000.”
